Beacons to Safeguard Crosswalk for Students

To enhance the safety of students, the city will spend $21,000 to install flashing beacons near Landell Elementary School.

After the city’s Traffic Commission strongly urged the use of the beacons, the City Council voted unanimously to pay for them.

The beacons will be at an existing crosswalk at Denni Street and Via Majorca. City public works director Mark Christoffels estimated that the project could be completed by May.

“The proposed flashing beacons would operate only during the hours children will be crossing” the intersection, Christoffels wrote in a memo to the council. “This is done by operating the flashing beacons with time clocks.”

Christoffels said the new beacons would be similar to those already used at Arnold Elementary School, which is about half a mile from Landell Elementary School.

The Traffic Commission recommended the flashing lights after studying pedestrian traffic at Denni and Via Majorca.
