Countywide : Cancer Society Ushers In Spring With Daffodil Sale

Share

The daffodil, one of the first flowers of spring, is used by the American Cancer Society as a symbol of hope for patients. In keeping with that theme, the organization is now taking orders for its 11th annual Daffodil Days next month.

Proceeds go to cancer research, education and patient services such as the Reach to Recovery program, workshops and free transportation to and from medical treatment.

One of the beneficiaries of such services in the past is Jayne Berberian, a cancer survivor now active as a volunteer for the organization.

Diagnosed with breast cancer 17 years ago, the Laguna Beach resident recalls how her spirits were lifted and her confidence boosted by a visit from a Cancer Society volunteer. Berberian is among those spearheading this year’s daffodil sale. “Every dollar [participants] help bring in is going toward saving a life,” she said.

Margaret Edwards, regional director of marketing communications for the organization, said the Orange County daffodil sale raised $150,000 last year and hopes to bring in $190,000 this year as people become more familiar with the program.

The deadline for orders is March 1. The flowers cost $7 for 10 wrapped blossoms and $10 for 10 blossoms in a vase. For $50, the organization will arrange the blooms in a cobalt vase with other spring flowers, and an elaborate basket is available for $110.

Orders of $50 or more will be delivered to Orange County addresses on March 18 and 19. All other orders may be picked up on the same dates at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa or at American Cancer Society offices in Mission Viejo and Anaheim.
