COUNTERPUNK

I have mixed feelings about Pop Eye’s reports that the British punk-rock band the Sex Pistols might tour again. Will the group come across as pathetic? On the other hand, it would bring some long-overdue attention to my punk generation (people now in their 30s and early 40s).

Generation X-ers don’t truly understand punk rock. You get the self-destructiveness (the unfortunate “dark” side of punk) with Courtney Love, and you get the look and the sound with Green Day. But where’s the real rebellion? None of these X-er punk bands threaten the system--they are the system.

I have to admit that the part of me that wants the Sex Pistols to tour is stronger than the part that doesn’t. To have true ‘70s punk around again would certainly liven up the dull, mind-numbing ‘90s!
