Program to Showcase Blacks in History, Arts
As part of Black History Month, the Pacoima Community Youth Culture Center and the Black Student Union of Mission College will hold a “Black Exploration” program Tuesday.
“Our hope is to help motivate and inspire our young people to continue with the African American tradition of faith, family and courage,” said Connie Taylor-Broadous, the youth culture center’s executive director.
She said the program, which will run from noon to 6 p.m., will feature a variety of black speakers from the entertainment industry, including Grammy-winning singer Andrae Crouch and actress Marion Ramsey.
Among the highlights will be African American films from the 1920s to the present, and films on African American trailblazers in such fields as medicine.
Taylor-Broadous said the program will emphasize that Americans of all races have contributed to American history and that ethnic diversity should be celebrated.
“This program is important for all people, not just blacks,” said Ida Mack, president of Mission College’s Black Student Union.
The event will be held at the Mission College Campus Center, 13356 Eldridge Ave., Sylmar.
