School Panel Selects Mossman to Lead District TV Station

In a rare move, Los Angeles Board of Education members rejected Supt. Sid Thompson’s selection of a former broadcast news executive to head the district’s public television station and opted instead for another of the three finalists for the job.

Tom Mossman, who heads the telecommunication department for the Los Angeles Archdiocese and provides programming to about 135 schools, was selected by the school board in a 4-2 vote with one abstention. Mossman’s experience includes eight years managing KLCS Channel 58, the district station.

Thompson had promised the position to John Lippman, the former KCBS-TV Channel 2 news director who was fired from that station in 1993 after widespread criticism of his management style.

School board members, however, raised concerns about Lippman’s history and interviewed the three finalists themselves.
