Leisure World resident Galal Kernahan, a community activist who started a program in which kindergarten students visit college campuses, has been honored for his achievement.

The Orange County Department of Education presented Kernahan with its Outstanding Contributions to Education Award for founding KinderCaminata three years ago.

Several hundred kindergarten pupils visited Rancho Santiago College in 1994. In 1995, thousands visited four college campuses across the county. This year, even more youngsters are expected, and visits are planned to every college campus in the county.

Kernahan’s goal was to introduce the youngest students in the system to higher education and encourage them to work for a college degree.

“I cannot think of another person who has contributed more . . . toward success of Orange County students than Galal,” Rancho Santiago Community College District Chancellor Vivian Blevins said.
