Residents Organize to Stop Texaco Plan

Share

Angered over a proposal to build a Texaco gas station and 24-hour market in their small residential community, Oak Park residents have collected more than 1,000 signatures against the project and started a “Say No To Texaco” hotline.

Although Texaco Corp. has yet to submit a formal proposal for the station to the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council, residents say the idea shouldn’t even get that far.

“We don’t want to see a fast-food mini-mart. We don’t want to see alcohol. We don’t want this open 24 hours. And we definitely don’t want a gas station,” said Ruth Rose, the chief organizer of the campaign to kill the proposal.

In December, Texaco officials announced plans to build a high-tech gas station with an around-the-clock convenience store and major fast-food restaurant on 3.7 acres at Lindero Canyon and Kanan roads.

When residents learned of the plan, more than 100 showed up at the February council meeting to protest, vowing to boycott the station. Since then they have collected more than 1,000 signatures from residents in Oak Park and neighboring Agoura Hills who are opposed to the project.

About 22 residents have formed a Say No To Texaco committee with a 24-hour hotline to answer questions on the proposal. The number is (818) 865-1411.

Council members will hear residents’ concerns at 8 tonight during a meeting at Brookside Elementary School in Oak Park.
