City to Purchase Used Sewer-Cleaning Device
By buying secondhand, city officials said, they can clean up on a piece of equipment designed to do just that.
The City Council voted Monday night to buy used sewer-cleaning equipment, rather than new machinery. The secondhand purchase, officials said, will cost less than half what a new sewer-cleaning device would.
The deal also allows the city to take immediate possession of the equipment, which consists of a trailer holding a sewer-cleaning vacuum. Delivery of a new model would have taken as long as six months.
“The city will save $26,690 by purchasing a used vacuum cleaner rather than purchasing a new unit for $52,844,” public works director Mark Christoffels said in a written report to the council.
He said that the used unit, being purchased from a Petaluma firm, still has “a full factory warranty” and will cost only $24,500 plus tax.
Christoffels said that sewer-cleaning work in the city will begin quickly with the fast delivery promised by the seller.
