$95,400 Allocated to Replenish Sand
The city has agreed to participate in a federal program that will replenish the sand on its beaches.
The City Council voted this week to allocate $95,400 toward the total cost of the $9.7-million sand replenishment project, which will stretch from Anaheim Bay harbor to the west jetty of Newport Beach harbor.
Federal, state and county agencies as well as the coastal cities are sharing the cost for the project, which has been delayed since 1994 by a lack of funds.
Ron Hagan, Huntington Beach’s director of community services, said that with financing finally lined up, the project is expected to be completed by September.
Since 1963, the city has been working with the various agencies to combat beach erosion.
From 1964 through 1990, the sand was replenished nine times.
