Update / Follow-up on the news : Housing Project for Santiago Hills OKd

Share

The developer of a housing project proposed for Santiago Hills has won the city’s permission to proceed.

Greubel Co. of Tustin has a long list of conditions to meet, but the City Council agreed this week to drop an earlier requirement that 25% of the 87 housing units be affordable for senior citizens with low or very low incomes.

The Planning Commission had denied a permit for the project in September 1994, saying that it was inappropriate for the steeply sloped 3-acre parcel on Newport Boulevard. Neighbors also argued against the development, saying it would spoil the rural atmosphere.

Developer Jerome Greubel appealed that ruling to the City Council in January 1995 but was sent back to the Planning Commission. He then reduced the number and height of proposed buildings, increased parking, drew up a new grading plan and added to pedestrian and recreational trails.

“I think you’ve done a good job of taking something we weren’t too pleased with and making something excellent out of it,” Mayor Joanne Coontz said.
