Joe Ozaki got out early before the wind put some teeth into the Blue Monster and shot a 65 Friday to take the lead midway through the Doral-Ryder Open.

Ozaki made seven birdies, including two from fairway bunkers, and had no bogeys to get to 10-under-par 134, a stroke ahead of Michael Bradley and two better than Greg Norman and Vijay Singh. Jeff Sluman was at 137.

The wind that was so tame Thursday kicked up to its normal 20-mph range, tossing shots around and firming up greens that were as receptive as dartboards in the first round.

“It was a lot tougher today,” Bradley said after playing in the afternoon and following his opening-round 64 with a 71. “When it gets windy like this, this course can play pretty tough. The greens were so much firmer, nothing like yesterday,” when Lee Janzen shot a 63, Curt Byrum a 65 and seven players were at 67.

The afternoon winds blew Janzen and Byrum to 76s in the second round.
