Compaq, NEC Unveil New PC Models: Compaq Computer Corp., a leading maker of personal computers, rolled out 35 new models aimed at businesses and government customers. The company set the industry on edge Friday with a decision to lower profits to maintain faster sales growth than competitors. While Compaq cut prices on existing models and accessories, its pricing for the new models was not as radical as might have been expected from the reaction to its announcement Friday. The company will sell models that use Pentium 150- and 166-megahertz microprocessors in a range from $2,685 to $3,425, excluding monitors. Digital Equipment Corp. responded to Compaq’s move by cutting prices 6% to 26% on models it sells to businesses. NEC Corp. jumped into the low-price fray with a product series called the PowerMate V. The starting price is just below $1,300, excluding monitors.
