Hosts Sought for Japanese Students

Organizers of an international exchange program are looking for families willing to host high school students from Japan. Twenty-five Japanese students are expected to arrive March 21 for a 13-day immersion into American culture, said Roxanne Kelley of Cultural Homestay International.

The students, who attend an English-language school in Japan, are eager to practice their language skills and learn about American culture, Kelley said.

In the daytime, they will have a full program of language classes in Newbury Park. Kelley said she hopes the students will be hosted by families in nearby communities.

“They need a family to talk to, to learn from and to share this once-in-a lifetime experience,” Kelley said.

Kelley, who has hosted 14 students since 1988, said host families benefit as much as visiting students.

“You come away with an experience where you share your home and your heart with someone from another culture,” Kelley said. “It’s really good for kids and broadens their education. You never know what the experience will do for you.”

One of the students in last year’s program liked the American way of life so much that she returned to Camarillo this year--to get married.
