The local chapter of a support group for families of gays and lesbians will present a speaker in Ventura tonight who will talk about parents and gay children.

Robert Bernstein, a former law professor and freelance writer from Maryland, will address the public at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Foothills, 6279 Foothill Road.

Author of the book “Straight Parents/Gay Children,” Bernstein will deliver a speech titled “Real Family Values” that discusses the lives of parents who have gay and lesbian children. In his book, Bernstein gives a personal account of coming to terms with his daughter’s homosexuality.

The event is being sponsored by Ventura County Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. One of more than 340 chapters across the nation, the local countywide chapter enables parents and families of homosexuals to meet on a regular basis and provide support to each other.

“We are parents who hope to make a difference in helping other parents learn what we have learned,” said Sandy Yost, 74, president of the local chapter and the mother of a gay son. “There are so many myths and misconceptions about homosexuality. We just feel that our kids should not be discriminated against as they are in so many areas.”
