The confessed killer of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, testifying from the witness stand for the first time, told a Tel Aviv court Monday that ritual Jewish law dictated that he assassinate the Israeli leader.

Yigal Amir, who shot Rabin to death at a Tel Aviv peace rally Nov. 4, said the prime minister’s peace policies endangered Israelis and had to be halted.

“It was clear from Jewish law that din rodef applied to the prime minister,” Amir said, referring to religious law allowing the killing of someone who intends to cause the death of Jews.
