The driver of a charter bus carrying the USC women’s basketball team died of a heart attack at the wheel Wednesday night on U.S. 2 west of Spokane, shortly after the bus left Spokane International Airport.

Coach Fred Williams said that after he saw the driver, Jim Anderson, 64, of Lewiston, Idaho, lying on the steering wheel, he asked him if he was all right. When he didn’t get an answer, Williams said, “I jumped up and grabbed the steering wheel and kept us from going down the middle of two lanes.”

USC defeated Washington State, 87-81, in Pullman on Thursday night.
