Don’t Expect a King’s Ransom

The Royal Divorce could mean a few more dollars in your pocket if you have some old trinkets commemorating 1981’s Royal Wedding. But probably not many.

Victor Weiner, executive director of the Appraisers Assn. of America, predicts a modest rise in prices, citing the mass production of plates, mugs, matchbooks and other items and the less-than-kingly quality of most of them.

Chris Scharfman, manager of memorabilia store Chic a Boom on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, also doubts Chuck and Di items will ever become hot collectibles. For one, the pair have no mystique, she says--”We know everything about them.” For another, there’s not the element of humor that makes other personality memorabilia popular: “There’s nothing funny about them. But there’s something funny about ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘Starsky and Hutch.’ ”
