Central Los Angeles : Babies Leave Their Mark at Shower in Their Honor

Share

More than 30 babies and their mothers attended a massive shower in south Los Angeles Friday.

The moms are participants in Birthing Project USA, a nonprofit organization of volunteers who offer prenatal care and parenting classes to pregnant women. The project was founded in 1988 by Kathryn Hall, who was moved by statistics showing that African Americans had twice the national infant mortality rate.

Each participant is paired with a “sister-friend” who provides support during and after pregnancy.

For the baby shower, the moms helped their children make footprints on a large foam map of the United States, placing pint-sized prints on each of the states where a branch of the Birthing Project has opened.

This weekend, African Pride Products is raising money for Birthing Project through an African American children’s book fair at the Magic Johnson Theaters and the Baldwin Crenshaw Plaza.
