Reopening of Public Shooting Range Proposed

The Huntington Beach Police Officer’s Assn. proposed Friday that the city reopen the city’s controversial public shooting range.

In May 1993, the public section of the shooting range was closed for construction because it was deemed unsafe. The structure, built on unsteady land, was sinking.

Since then, however, no work has been done because of disagreements within the City Council and among residents, said Richard Wright, association president.

That section of the shooting range where officers practice has remained open.

On Monday, residents packed a City Council meeting with conflicting demands. A group of 60 residents urged the city to completely close the police firing range until safety improvements are made. One man complained that a stray bullet struck the back door of his home.

But a petition with more than 200 signatures also demanded that the public range be open for gun safety classes and recreational use.

The police union proposes that construction be completed and the public range reopened on weekdays only with limited hours.

The proposal is expected to discussed at the City Council meeting on Monday, Wright said.
