The Finishing Touch

Share

The right tools can make all the difference when you’re working on your house.

Flow-Thru Finishers, brightly colored tools for caulking, smoothing and other such tasks, help do-it-yourselfers give their work a professional finish.

“The metal insert [included in the package] allows the finishing tools to fit on all caulking, industrial size or the standard size, even those not made for caulking guns,” says David Hanacek of Mission Viejo, creator of Flow-Thru Finishers.

The tools ($3.79 or less for several styles) also can be used as nonscratching putty knives and are ideal for dispensing liquid nails.

In choosing the colors for the tools, Hanacek and his wife and co-owner, Amy, consulted the expert of the household, their 5-year-old son, John. He chose the bright colors, and they have been well-received by customers.

“Most hardware products are PVC black or white,” Hanacek says. “We wanted our product to have some eye appeal. Some of our customers have told us they bought our tools just because of the colors.”

It’s a Gem

Let your jewelry shine with the FindersKeepers lamp, a new generation jewelry box and lamp all in one.

The foot-high lamp ($30 plus shipping and handling) comes in ivory or black with a ceramic base and an acrylic top. Each lamp holds as many as 60 pairs of earrings. The posts of the earrings do not get hot from the light bulb because of the lamp’s patented design.

The shade creates a showcase effect when lighted, and the base has a tray to hold earring backs and other accessories.

Designer Clint Stanley of Balboa Island came up with the idea after his two teenage daughters were always complaining about losing or misplacing their earrings.

“Now all they have to do is stick them into the lamp,” says Stanley, who worked as a stockbroker before designing the lamp.

“It appeals to anyone with pierced earrings. We’ve sold a lot of lamps to teenage girls. Now, their mothers and grandmothers are calling back to order one for themselves.”

That’s Entertainment

Buying a home theater system is easy, but finding a place to house all the components and videotapes is another matter.

There’s nothing worse than having cables and audio and electronic equipment taking over a room, let alone becoming the focus of it.

Arbek Furniture of Chino has created several system units to solve this problem. Versatility is the key, since the styles range from traditional to casual contemporary. The most versatile unit, the Villager Midwall, has several key features.

For one, it has foldaway pocket doors, so everyone in the room has unobstructed viewing. There are outlets for easy hookup of other components and cabinets at the base of the unit to store such things as video games.

The middle piece, which can hold most monitors as big as 35 inches, can be purchased separately for about $1,000. The three pieces combined cost about $2,000.

The Villager Midwall, made of pine, comes in five finishes--light scrubbed pine, antiqued sage, golden brown, cherry and honey--and is available at JCPenney and Robinsons-May.
