Crash Kills 5, Critically Injures 1 on Artesia Freeway in Carson
A fiery two-car crash Saturday on the Artesia Freeway in Carson killed five people, including two children, and left a 25-year-old man in critical condition.
The accident occurred about 6:50 p.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway, California Highway Patrol spokesman Mark Whichard said.
A Ford Mustang carrying six people was stalled in the No. 1 lane and was rear-ended by a Jeep Cherokee traveling about 55 mph, Whichard said.
Both vehicles exploded on impact, and five people in the Mustang died immediately. A man was thrown from the car and transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance with third-degree burns.
“Three adults and two children were trapped in the Mustang and died in the fire,” Whichard said.
The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries.
