World IN BRIEF : PERU : Ecuador Reportedly Violated Peace Pact
- Share via
Peru has accused Ecuador of violating a fragile peace treaty by flying an air force plane over Peruvian territory near the demilitarized zone along the two countries’ disputed border, press reports said. Newspapers in Lima said Peru complained formally to international military observers that an Ecuadoran air force plane violated Peru’s air space 5 miles east of the 204-square-mile demilitarized zone. The reports could not be independently confirmed. In a conflict last year, dozens were killed and more than a hundred wounded on both sides in fighting over a patch of Amazon jungle along the Cordillera del Condor, about 560 miles north of Lima.
