Miami Location Chosen for Military Command
The military’s Southern Command said it has selected a site here for its new headquarters.
SouthCom is the regional unified command responsible for U.S. military activities in Central and South America south of Mexico. The Panama Canal Treaty of 1977 requires the U.S. military to relocate SouthCom from that nation by Dec. 31, 1999. Construction of the facility was set to begin in April, with completion set for March 1997.
The building will be erected by SMPO Properties Inc. of Memphis, Tenn., then leased to the government for a base rent of $1,734,960 a year, plus services and utilities, under a 10-year lease.
