BORDER PATROL: Watch for Rep. Elton Gallegly to move this week to put more bite into the Immigration in the National Interest Act. . . . The Simi Valley Republican wants to stop illegal immigrants from getting federal housing assistance, while giving states the option of denying education to undocumented immigrants. Most importantly, Gallegly says, will be his attempt to restore a pilot worker verification program to the bill (B1).

BYRD MAN: Rock ‘n’ roll hall of famer Chris Hillman stopped touring more than a year and a half ago after three decades on the road, including his days with the legendary Byrds. . . . But the Ojai resident will make a special appearance at 8 p.m. Saturday at Harbortown Marina Resort on behalf of Ventura County libraries. . . . “Since my family uses their services all the time, I thought it was something I could certainly do,” said the father of two, ages 12 and 7. “It’s either libraries or we all stay indoors watching television. That’s a pretty bad alternative.”

TIME BETWEEN: When Hillman performs at the library benefit, he’ll reprise a few of the tunes that still symbolize an era, including “Turn Turn Turn,” the Pete Seeger song that the Byrds turned into a classic. With so much time gone by, it’s a number that Hillman is just now rediscovering. . . . “I’m starting to really appreciate that song after 30 years. . . . It holds up well.” He’ll also perform a healthy dose of recent material, having just finished recording two new albums. Call 646-7230 for ticket info.

OUT TO LUNCH: Menu planners in Ventura County schools work hard to make sure that school lunches have less fat and salt, and more fresh produce than they did in past years (B1). But school kids still have youthful palates. . . . Said 11-year-old Lou Fontana, a student in the Conejo Valley district: “They should give us Taco Bell.”
