$209,000 in Block Grants Awarded
Although Camarillo city officials had less than half as much money to offer this year as last year, there was no shortage of applications for community development block grants.
More than 15 nonprofit groups and agencies applied for shares of the 1996-97 federal grant funds--money that helps pay for youth and senior programs, homeless shelters and an array of other goods and services.
The Camarillo City Council last week divvied up $209,000, less than half of the $479,000 the city was awarded by the federal government last year.
Despite the drop, council members were able to award some funds to most of the applicants.
Among other agencies, money was awarded to Oasis, a group that matches up teenagers with senior citizens to help with yard work and other chores; FoodShare, which provides meals to the hungry; and the Palmer Drug and Alcohol Abuse prevention program, which provides recovery services to young people.
Nearly $42,000 of the federal money is scheduled to be spent on administering the grant.
