Officials Wrap Up Details on Extending Grant to Hire 6 Officers

Share

Hawthorne city officials visited Washington on Monday to finalize paperwork on the extension of the 1994 federal grant that will give the city funds to hire six new police officers.

City Manager Bud Cormier said the city got the $532,000 grant more than a year ago but lacked the required matching funds. The city recently cleared its debt by making arrangements to lease its water utility for 15 years.

Cormier said the city plans to place the officers on the community-based policing beat. He said the city hopes to have officers out on the street by the end of the year to help stem the rising crime rate, which increased by 11% last year.
