Central Los Angeles : Council Affirms Plan to Clean Up Dump

Share

In a 3-2 vote, the Huntington Park City Council dismissed residents’ concerns over a 600,000-ton concrete mountain and let stand a plan to clean up the debris and close the dump by early next year.

The vote followed testimony by residents and attorneys regarding health, environmental and legal issues over the much-debated concrete pile, owned by Aggregate Recycling Systems.

The council unanimously agreed last month that owner Sam Chew must cease new shipments and clear the lot by Feb. 1, 1997.

Councilman Richard V. Loya said he is concerned that concrete dust and other debris threaten the health of nearby residents.

Loya said lung tests of 55 residents showed that “some type of pulmonary problem exists in the area even though exact cause cannot be exacted from the evaluation method used.” Loya said the high percentage of lung ailments found in the tests merits an extensive environmental and health impact assessment.

Mayor Thomas Jackson and council members Raul Perez and Rosario Marin voted against further evaluation.
