Nation IN BRIEF : KANSAS : Tammy Faye Messner Has Cancer Surgery

Tammy Faye Messner, former wife of evangelist Jim Bakker, is undergoing treatment for colon cancer, her husband’s lawyer revealed. “They had to do a very fast surgery,” attorney Steve Joseph said after Roe Messner was sentenced to 27 months in prison for bankruptcy fraud in Wichita, Kan. “This development with Mrs. Messner was rather sudden, unexpected.” Joseph said the prognosis for her recovery was good. Tammy Faye Messner did not attend the sentencing hearing where her husband, a 60-year-old contractor, also was sentenced to two years’ probation and ordered to pay $72,500 in restitution. He is free on bond pending his appeal.
