A 61-year-old man known as the “Baseball Cap Bandit” pleaded guilty Thursday to three bank robberies in which he stole more than $3,000 late last year and early this year, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

John Duane Buckland was arrested Jan. 29, about eight hours after he robbed a Great Western Bank in the 500 block of Glendale Avenue, police said.

Buckland was arrested at the American Motel in Glendale, where police believe he lived while he committed the robberies.

The bearded, gray-haired man routinely wore baseball caps during the robberies, police said.

Police suspected him of having held up as many as seven banks in the Glendale area, but prosecutors said he admitted to only three.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16. He could be ordered to serve up to 60 years in prison and pay $750,000 in fines, police said.

No injuries were reported in the robberies, according to police.
