Gene Estes; Jazz Musician

Gene Estes, 64, jazz musician who played the vibraphone and drums and organized his own modern-day big band. A familiar talent in Los Angeles clubs, Estes was the drummer on the original “Theme From Peter Gunn.” With trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, he formed a 13-piece band in the 1960s that had regular engagements throughout Southern California for three decades. Estes was admired by critics and the public for his work on percussion instruments and the vibraphone. He performed at such popular locations as the Jazz Bakery, Roxbury, El Matador and jazz festivals in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Santa Ana. On Sunday in North Hollywood of cancer.
