A jury on Friday recommended the death penalty for a man convicted of murdering three people and wounding a fourth at a South-Central Los Angeles tire store in December 1992.

Lamar Barnwell is expected to be sentenced April 18 in the execution-style murders of Eural Johnson, Kenneth Newman and Sandra Green at Williams Tire Service. Jesse Dwight Bingham was critically wounded.

Barnwell, 29, opened fire about 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 5, 1992, at the all-night store near Century Boulevard and San Pedro Street.

Los Angeles police officers, who happened to be patrolling the area, heard the gunfire and rushed to the scene. The officers peered through a hole in the fence and saw two men lying on the ground with a man shooting them in the head.

Barnwell was chased and shot by a police officer.
