Panel Dislikes Plan for Warning Signs

The Westlake Village Public Safety Committee is urging the City Council to reject Agoura Hills’ request to place traffic signs in Westlake Village warning of Agoura Hills’ ban on heavy trucks on part of Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

Agoura Hills recently banned trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds from a half-mile stretch of road between Reyes Adobe Road and the boundary between the two cities. Officials said it was a precaution to prevent overuse by heavy trucks going to and from a PriceCostco store under construction in Westlake Village at Lindero Canyon Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

But the Westlake Village committee says the ban is unnecessary because few heavy trucks use that stretch of road, Westlake Village City Manager Ray Taylor said.

To comply with Agoura Hills’ request, he said, as many as five large signs would be posted, undoing Westlake Village’s efforts to limit unsightly signs. The Westlake Village City Council will discuss the matter tonight at City Hall at 7:30.

“It’s their call,” Agoura Hills City Manager Dave Adams said. He said his city will place the signs just inside the Agoura Hills city line. Hard feelings were created between officials from the two cities after Agoura Hills objected to construction of the PriceCostco store, which was fiercely opposed by many Agoura Hills residents.
