University to Host California Games

When the California State Games open at Cal State Fullerton in August, the event will use the university’s sports complex rent-free under a deal worked out between the school and the city.

The city is allowed to use the sports complex free twice a year. The City Council decided to contribute one of the city’s openings to the games, which are a development program for the Olympics.

“We should be honored to host this group,” Councilman Don Bankhead said.

The council voted to contribute as much as $4,500 toward operating costs for the ceremonies.

The games, sponsored by Lindquist Group of Irvine and the Orange County Sports Assn., will be held across Orange County for four days. The only time all the athletes--most of them 12 to 18 years old--will be together is during the opening ceremonies.

The event is expected to attract thousands of spectators, sponsors said.

“It’s a celebration of the good kids,” said Brain McInerney, a Lindquist Group vice president.

He said Olympic athletes and other celebrities will be on hand for the ceremonies Aug. 9.
