The Times’ Bill Plaschke was honored in three writing divisions among papers with circulation of at least 175,000 in the 1995 Associated Press Sports Editors contest.

Plaschke teamed with Elliott Almond to win first place in the news division with a story on the Wonderlic test, an exam given to prospective NFL draft picks. Plaschke’s story on a week in the life of the Garfield High football team won second place in the feature category, and his story of the Cleveland Browns’ final home game won fifth place in the game story category.

The Times took second place in enterprise reporting for a package on crime in sports. Almond, who has left Los Angeles for the Seattle Times, was also on that reporting team, coordinated by Assistant Sports Editor Emilio Garcia-Ruiz.

Results were announced Wednesday by Tim Ellerbee of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, APSE’s second vice president and contest chair.

Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press, who had won in column writing for nine consecutive years, did not finish in the top five.

Final judging of the writing divisions was done by panels of senior news executives this month.
