Share

About 60 people gathered at the East Los Angeles Library on Friday to celebrate the birthday of the late union leader Cesar Chavez and mark the 20th anniversary of the Chicano Resource Center.

“I am very happy to see people keeping his memory alive,” Richard Chavez, Cesar Chavez’s brother said.

A 50-item exhibit at the library’s Chicano Resource Center commemorates the labor leader’s birthday. He would have been 69 years old Sunday. Chavez died in his sleep April 23, 1993.

The display features photographs of Chavez in strike lines, on magazine covers and buttons. The exhibit, which runs through May 1, includes memorabilia from personal collections compiled by the Friends of the Library group and workers at the Chicano Resource Center.

The center, a collection of material on Chicano history and culture, houses more than 10,000 volumes, videos and compact discs.

The East Los Angeles Library is at 4801 E. 3rd Street. For information, (213) 264-0155.
