Man Pepper-Sprays Officer, Gets Shot

A sheriff’s special officer shot an unidentified man in the upper torso late Friday as he ran away after apparently pepper-spraying the officer, sheriff’s deputes and Fullerton police said.

About 10:15 p.m., a sworn officer working as a security guard at the Fullerton Transportation Center in the 100 block of South Pomona Avenue approached a “suspicious-looking” man and began talking to him, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard Paddock said. Fullerton police said the man used pepper spray on the officer and then took off running, but sheriff’s authorities said they couldn’t confirm whether pepper spray was used.

The officer then fired one shot in the subject’s upper torso, possibly in the back, Fullerton police said.

The man, taken to UCI Medical Center, was expected to live, Paddock said.

The district attorney’s office and the Sheriff’s Department are investigating. A special officer is a sworn officer, but has fewer responsibilities than a deputy sheriff.
