First Lady Urges Equality for Women
Touring this cradle of freedom, Hillary Rodham Clinton declared Friday that for democracy to succeed in the United States and other nations, women must “become equal partners in society.”
Too many women and children live “on the margins of society,” she said, urging nations to better feed and educate the young and to give women improved health care, jobs, credit, legal protection and political rights.
The remarks, following her tour of Athens and the remnants of its ancient democracy, mixed strong words and symbols to enforce the main theme of her eight-day European trip: The world prospers if women and children prosper.
