Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The FBI learned firsthand that cargo theft is a big problem when agents set up a sting to lure thieves to a fake fencing operation and became victims themselves. About $200,000 worth of liquor, perfume, computer programs and other stolen merchandise that was recovered in the FBI sting was stolen a second time by thieves who broke down a wall at the warehouse used by the FBI, according to indictments unsealed in Miami. Adding insult to injury, a man told undercover agents he would retrieve the stolen goods at gunpoint, the agents paid him $5,000 and the man never produced the goods, according to one of the indictments.
