Logging a Complaint About Forest Story

It concerned me that “Push for Logging in Russia Sparks Debate” (Feb. 26) reported that the Overseas Private Investment Corp. is supporting a bid to log virgin forest along the pristine Khor River valley in the Khabarovsk region. In fact, this OPIC-supported project is not located in the Khor River valley but rather several hundred miles away in the Vanino region of Khabarovsk.
The project has been designed and is operating consistent with the highest forestry standards. The sponsors have agreed to abide by U.S. forest guidelines that are designed to reduce the frequency and size of clear cutting and to maximize natural regeneration of diverse species. In addition, the project abides by Russian Forest Service standards, which include strict restrictions on logging in the vicinity of surface waters on steep slopes and in areas of high biodiversity.
At OPIC, a profit-making federal agency that encourages U.S. private investment in developing markets overseas, we support projects that find ways to balance economic development with environmental protection. All OPIC-backed projects undergo a thorough review to ensure that the project promotes sustainable development. And, once on the books, OPIC continues to monitor projects to ensure environmental compliance.
After 25 years of experience, supporting $84 billion worth of investments that will generate $43 billion in U.S. exports and help create 200,000 American jobs, OPIC proves that investments in emerging markets can be viable ventures and respect the local environment. We not only prove this, we pride ourselves on it.
