34 Van Nuys-Area Street Vendors Cited

A city task force targeting illegal street vendors on Saturday seized 10 pushcarts, 2,000 pounds of fruit, and cited 34 vendors in Panorama City and Van Nuys for failing to comply with health codes, police said.

Inspectors from the city’s Building and Safety Department and the county’s health department inspected more than 60 sites along Van Nuys and Roscoe boulevards and Chase Street, said Sgt. Ed Brayton of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Division.

All vendors, whether they sell cut fruit or bagged fruit, hot dogs or ice cream, need a city permit and a permit from the health department, Brayton said.

“We just want to get these vendors to comply,” Brayton said.

Some vendors were cited for having signs that are too large or for selling merchandise out of their homes, he said.

Brayton said vendors are usually inspected twice a year by the health department.
