Disney Concert Hall Garage

Share

“Without Concert Hall, Garage Draws Few Cars” (March 20) was very misleading. It leaves the incorrect impression that the garage was built solely to support Walt Disney Concert Hall when, in fact, the garage was never intended solely for concert hall parking.

Time has a way of erasing memories, and recessions have a way of changing plans. Let me remind you that when Disney Hall was first conceptualized, two major office projects were being planned. These projects, together with other anticipated growth in the area, would have supported daytime parking at the garage, which clearly is critical to the garage’s long-term financial success. The expected heavy use of the garage during evening performances at Disney Hall was to provide extra revenue to the county.

With our local economy improving, prospects for renewed vitality in the area immediately surrounding Disney Hall also will grow, and the traffic generated by that growth will support the Disney Concert Hall garage. Certainly, the county also must be exploring promotional opportunities to create awareness that the garage is open for business.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall project has taken longer than was anticipated when Mrs. Lillian B. Disney first made her gift. But with new leadership in place, a renewed commitment from the County Board of Supervisors and a solid fund-raising effort underway, Disney Hall will be built, and it will uphold its commitment to provide after-hours parking to supplement the garage’s normal daytime traffic.
