County to Consider Architect for Library

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday will consider hiring a Los Angeles architect to design a new Oak Park library and develop a plan to build the facility in three phases.

Fields & Devereaux Architects wants $37,930 to do the design work for a 15,000-square-foot library at Oak Park High School, which would replace a facility on the campus.

Although county leaders approved the new library two years ago, Ventura County library officials now say money shortages may force construction to move forward in phases.

Dixie Adeniran, director of the county’s Library Services Agency, said she hopes to tap into a recently approved bond measure that sets aside $25 million for cooperative ventures between public libraries and schools.

“That is one potential source of money,” Adeniran said. “The community out there has been working hard for several years, and they need an improved facility.”

As envisioned, the project would consist of a 6,600-square-foot first phase, and separate phases of 3,400 square feet and 5,000 square feet as money becomes available.

Under the proposed contract, the architect would return to the Board of Supervisors with designs and cost estimates in about two months.
