Security Assistance Offered to Residents

Low-income adults who are elderly, disabled or living with AIDS can have their homes made safer and more accessible for free through Home Secure, a nonsectarian program of the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles’ North Hollywood office.

Home Secure is a free safety and security service designed to allow people with limited incomes and disabilities to live in their own homes, according to program director Leslie Friedman.

To maximize client self-sufficiency and limit risk of injuries from home accidents, the program provides for bathroom grab bars, deadbolt locks for entry doors, peepholes, window locks and other home-safety devices.

The program, which covers a wide swath of the San Fernando Valley and the Beverly-Fairfax area, is open to income-eligible renters and homeowners of any age. All applications are taken by telephone to allow even homebound people to apply, Friedman said. Maximum income eligibility is $28,150 for a single person and $32,150 for a couple. The eligibility limit increases for each additional family member.

Clients may seek assistance on their own or be referred by social workers, health care professionals, community agencies and family members.

Home Secure is funded by the Los Angeles and West Hollywood community development departments.

Program brochures are available in English, Spanish, Russian, Cantonese and Korean.
