Web’s Notable Repertoire Fills Thousands of Pages

Share

Music is one of the largest subject categories on the World Wide Web, where many thousands of pages have been created by major record companies, tiny independent labels, artists and online publishers of electronic magazines, among many others.

Online service providers such as America Online (AOL), Prodigy and CompuServe also have music sites. To explore the Web’s cybermusic scene, a good place to start is Yahoo!, the Web search tool. Go to Yahoo! (https://www.yahoo.com), click on the “entertainment” category, then “music.” From there, you’ll be able to go directly to about 13,000 music-related Web pages indexed by Yahoo!. Most offer music clips, artist biographies, pictures and the like--and some sell CDs too.

One of the most extensive lists of music links is called the Worldwide Web of Music, at https://american.recordings.com/WWWoM. Most online sites are devoted to individual artists and are often run by fans.

Here are a few other interesting sites: Internet Underground Music Archive (https://www.iuma.com), a clearinghouse for the alternative rock scene; Addicted to Noise (https://www.addict.com) and SonicNet (https://www.sonic.com), among the best music magazines on the Web; and Rocktropolis, (https://www.rocktropolis.com), an elaborate, graphics-rich online environment.
