A SPECIAL REPORT: JETHAWKS LAND

Share

MULTIFACETED: The Hangar, as recently completed Lancaster Municipal Stadium has been nicknamed, is more than just a ballpark. . . . It’s also a hair salon, health parlor and R & R haven where fans can watch games of the JetHawks, a Class-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, and get a haircut or a massage from a physical therapist and take a relaxing dip in a four-person hot tub.

PRIZED RIGHT: Minor league teams are big on giveaways, and the JetHawks are no different. The team’s promotions include golf putting contests on the field, movie trivia questions flashed on the scoreboard and folks racing the mascot around the bases. Also, two people at each game will watch from a miniature car and be served free food. . . . Kids are allowed to run the bases after Sunday games. “The groundskeepers love that one,” said Eileen Garcia, director of sales. “But it’s job security.”

CA$H FLOW: The JetHawks keep doing famously at the cash register with the sale of merchandise. More than 2,000 people attended the team’s first public workout last Wednesday at the Hangar, and most didn’t leave the gift shop empty-handed. . . . “We sold a lot of jackets because the wind picked up and it was very cold,” said Yvette Hernandez, director of merchandising. “I had lines five deep.”
