Vehicle Restrictions Tightened at School

To improve safety at Serrano Elementary School, the City Council has placed tighter restrictions on vehicles using Serrano Avenue in front of the school.

The council voted to prohibit motorists from stopping their cars within a 500-foot area of Serrano Avenue facing the school. That area was already designated as a no-parking zone.

City Manager Fred Maley told the council that Serrano Principal Karren Inman had requested additional traffic restrictions. Some parents, Maley said, have been stopping their cars in front of the school while waiting to pick up their children after classes.

“It is unsafe to have elementary-school-age children crossing the street at this location to get to their parents’ cars,” Maley said.

“A related problem is that there is a long line of cars waiting to turn left into the school parking lot,” he said. “At times, traffic has backed up into Santiago Boulevard.”

In voting for the restrictions on Serrano Avenue, the council also approved new signs that will say “No Stopping or Standing” in addition to “No Parking.”
