Church to Celebrate Groundbreaking
Emerson Unitarian Church will break ground Sunday for its new church.
The ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at 7304 Jordan Ave. in Canoga Park. Church officials say that construction is expected to be completed in the fall.
The one-story, 3,700-square-foot stucco building will also house a social hall, church officials said. The plans call for another structure of about the same size that officials said will house a day-care program and administrative offices.
The full-time day-care program will be a new venture for the church, said Kathy Challis, vice president of the church’s board of trustees. The proceeds from the program will be used by the congregation to help repay the $693,500 federal building loan, Challis said.
The new church replaces a 70-year-old wooden structure that had been the church’s home for a quarter of a century. The building was yellow-tagged after the Northridge earthquake. Since then, the 150-member congregation has been worshiping in a senior citizens center next door.
The Canoga Park congregation was founded in 1956 as part of the Boston-based Unitarian Universalist Assn. Before moving to Jordan Avenue, the congregation held services in a nearby building on Owensmouth Avenue.
