A Watts youth center that was built in 1994 but never opened is slated to be purchased by the city of Los Angeles.

The City Council approved Wednesday the purchase of what is now known as the Westminster Tom Bradley/Milken Family Youth Center, located in the 1700 block of Century Boulevard, said Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr.

The new name for the structure will be the City of Los Angeles Community Development Department Tom Bradley/Milken Family Youth Center, Svorinich said, and is expected to be open for the summer. The center will provide services for youths and other residents of the Watts area, he said.

The Milken Family Foundation gave $1.5 million to the Westminster Neighborhood Assn. to help the nonprofit group build the structure. But the group defaulted on construction payments and the building never opened, Svorinich said.
