Horseback Riders to Take to City Streets

Share

Nearly 300 people on horseback will ride through the city today for the kickoff of the 33rd annual Viaje de Portola, a three-day expedition retracing the route of Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola.

Downtown streets will be closed from about 10:45 a.m. to noon for the riders, who will stop at the entrance of the Mission San Juan Capistrano at 11 a.m. to receive a blessing from Msgr. Paul Martin.

After that, the riders will head east on Ortega Highway toward the 40,000-acre Rancho Mission Viejo. The 30-mile round-trip journey helps raise money for the mission.
