Council OKs Lower Garbage Pickup Fees

Share

A decrease in residents’ trash pickup fees won City Council approval this week.

The typical residential trash collection rate will fall immediately to $14.62 a month from $15.84. The city’s waste haulers, Solag Disposal Inc. and Waste Management of Orange County, have agreed to pass along a reduction in county landfill fees.

Under a new contract with Solag that will take effect July 1, residents will pay $11.28 a month.

The reason the rate is less with the new contract, said Assistant City Manager Don White, “is that we’re instituting programs like green-waste recycling, which will mean less trash being sent to the landfill.”

Commercial rates under the current contract will also fall, with the amount of the decrease depending on the frequency of pickup and the type of bin used.

The city staff is still determining how much the commercial rates will be under the new contract and will probably make a report to the council by next month.

The new county landfill fees took effect April 1. Waste Management, which has already billed some customers this month based on the old rate, will send rebates. Bills being sent by Solag reflect the change, White said.

Residents who have not indicated what type of trash bins they want when Solag starts automated pickup this summer have until April 26 to contact the garbage hauler, White said.
